I can tell when I'm in People-Please-y and Over-Give-y mode, because my shoulders raise just slightly and my lungs fill with breath and stay that way — I never fully release... never fully relax...
It's like I'm in a constant state of inhale, waiting with bated breath to see if I'm "good enough" or if I'm going to be "okay" in someone's eyes.
And, because of the work I do, I'm getting better at noticing this — the moment when the shoulders raise, the moment when the silent and unconscious "uh-oh" shows up, the moment when I become on guard against an invisible attacker that's going to undo everything good that I think about myself...
and I'm getting better at releasing my shoulders, exhaaaaaaaaliiiiiiing fully, telling my nervous system she's completely safe, and telling my Ego,
"This is perfect. And I get to SHOW them that it's perfect. Watch..."
And know what happens?
People are more "okay" with me
when I'm okay with me.
People are more "pleased" when I decide that how I'm already showing up is perfect. People are more satisfied — relieved, even — when I let myself be my human-y, messy, full-embodied-Permission self, — than when I was overly concerned with pleasing them.
